The "Aha!" that Led Me from VC to Social Impact: Maya Chorengel, Managing Director, Elevar Equity

As a young child growing up in South East Asia, Maya saw the abject poverty all around her. The questions that followed stayed with her for many years, even as she reached the top of her industry. And then one day she heard a story that gave her the answer she was looking for. Told at Journeys: Stories of Aha! Moments at the David Brower Center June 20, 2013.

    Hi Jay,

Great story, great work, left me wanting to know more details which in some ways is a good thing.

I might suggest she spend a little less time on her childhood. She was a rich kid, a global expat kids, growing up she got to see poor kids outside her protected, privileged world , a bit like Siddhartha sneaking out of the palace. Make it shorter and then tell us more about how she helps the 11 million families and what we can do.

Ten all she needs to do is smile, laugh more…and take her hand out of her pocket.

Thanks for the link, looks like it was great show!

Hi Craig, thanks for the comment…and I’m glad you were left wanting to learn more. The guiding request for the show was to share an ‘Aha!’ moment that changed your life…from my perspective, regardless of upbringing, it’s the challenge that someone undertakes, and the change that results, that makes a good personal journey. There are countless people that came from comfortable upbringing that never have never listened for nor faced up to their calling, and I guess that was what I found so inspiring about Maya’s story. But yes, it’s always good to hear more stories of the people on the ground (time allowing!).
